ACCA's first Ethics Film Festival brings to life ethics and professional skills essential for accountancy and finance

ACCA's Ethics Film Festival 2017 promoted the importance of ethics to more than 800 members and friends

SINGAPORE, Oct. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The inaugural ACCA Ethics Film Festival 2017: Evolving Corporate Ethics for the Future Economy held between 6 - 20 October 2017, brought together professionals from the industry to discuss and address ethical issues and challenges that the accounting profession faces.

The Festival saw screenings of films such as Unraveled, The Insider, Inside Job and Wizard of Lies. The movies were followed by post-screening discussions as well as professional development seminars to help the sector reflect and internalise the lessons.

Participants of the two-week long festival shared that the event was interesting as this was the first time a professional body is using films to promote a cause.

For example, the audience at the screening of Inside Job discussed issues such as: "Whether executive compensation should be better structured to be in line with the institutions' long term performance?" and "If complicated products are the root cause of the 2008 crisis, why are we still allowing them and what are our safeguards?".

"The ACCA Film Festival is a wonderful way for us to learn and interact with like-minded professionals," said Ng Kian Hui, Audit & Technical Partner, BDO LLP Singapore.

"Instead of classroom based learning, which many of us may not be able to set aside time for; watching a movie is a great thought provoking entertainment that we can all appreciate. More importantly, it raises awareness of how we can deal with the challenges without compromising on our integrity. It was heartening to see a professional body use films to generate discussions over these issues," Kian Hui added.

Reuter Chua, Head of ACCA Singapore said, "Professional accountants are expected to display the highest ethical standards and to show leadership in guiding business to do the right thing.

As such, it is more important than ever that ethical judgement is seen as integral to their professional and technical skill-set."

"Since our inception, ACCA has been an active force in helping to develop accountancy profession the world needs. It is timely that ACCA introduces a new Ethics & Professional Skills Module which is also very relevant to Singapore's Committee to the Future Economy (CFE) report to support skills upgrade and the regionalisation of professional services.

"The public expects accounting professionals to carry out their technical roles with highest standards of integrity, independence and skepticism; not just to guide our personal behavior, but also detect and deter any unethical behavior that may tarnish our profession's reputation. The Film Festival was a novel way for the ACCA to showcase and propagate strong ethical standards through ethics in action," Reuter added.

The Film Festival was launched as ACCA unveils a series of evolutions to its qualification including a new Ethics and Professional Skills Module on October 31.
