Jennifer Chang-Wathall, an independent education consultant, was invited to run a three-day long concept-based maths workshop at the BIS, the island's oldest and most established school, for the training benefit of its Preschool, Kindergarten, and Grades 1 to 12 teaching staff.

Concept-based maths is about learning to make that practical connection between what the students are learning and how they can use it for everyday situations, rather than using an approach with only isolated facts and methods.

When you teach a subject's concept and context in a three-dimensional manner, instead of only learning using a two-dimensional rote system, students can better learn the practicalities of the subject matter, and more easily discover their own natural mathematical strengths and skills.

"A highlight of our workshop with Jennnifer Chang-Wathall was seeing the enthusiasm and passion of our team, working together, literally exploding with ideas. Guided by Jennifer, the professional conversations that we had were extremely motivating, and I am excited to implement those ideas into my classroom," says Nadia Demolder, Grade One teacher at BIS.

And there will be more workshops in the coming year:

"BIS is committed to a longer-term mathematical relationship with Jennifer Wathall, as we know deep learning takes place over time, melded through collaboration, and cemented through everyday practice. We look forward to working with Jennifer again in April 2020," says Garth Wyncoll, Head of School.
