SINGAPORE - Many people invest in jewellery because they like a particular piece of jewellery or gemstone. But they should also possess some knowledge about what they're buying.

Ms Ivy Choa, the general manager of DeGem Singapore, has been in the jewellery industry for over 30 years. She gives some tips on what to look out for when investing in gemstones.

Why should people invest in gemstones?

Diamonds and other gems are valuables that appreciate in value as time goes by - historical data and records show us this.

The rarer the gem, the better the value appreciation. Similarly, when demand starts to exceed supply, the value of these precious jewels increase rapidly.

How do you choose a gemstone to invest in?

For gem lovers who are considering making an investment in rare, precious diamonds and gems, a good start would be to go to a reputable jeweller who specialises in and has a proven track record with precious gems, such as top-quality white and coloured diamonds, unheated rubies and sapphires, and other rare gems.

How do you avoid being scammed in the industry?

Investors should always purchase gems with an international certification - this ascertains the authenticity, as well as other important characteristics that determine the value of the gem.

For most rare gems and jewellery collectibles, their true value is shown at auctions because that is where aficionados are willing to offer prices based on how much they believe the gems are truly worth.

How does gemstone investment work?

Many people purchase jewellery because they love jewellery and gemstones. This means they would have knowledge about what they are buying.

Like other investments, it is best to consider investing in rare gems only if you have sufficient knowledge of jewellery and gems and, better yet, have a personal interest in them.

What are some of your favourite gemstones and why?

I wear a blue-sapphire ring with diamonds all the time, because of its stunning beauty and deep sentimental value.

I love almost all coloured gemstones - notably coloured sapphires, Paraiba, Tanzanite and rubies - but diamonds remain my No. 1 love.

The Singapore International Jewelry Expo is being held at Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre till Sunday. The exhibition is open from 11.30am to 8.30pm today and tomorrow, and 11.30am to 7pm on Sunday.
