Little India riot: Race Course Road alcohol ban

There will be a complete ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol this weekend in the Race Course Road area, second Minister for Home Affairs S Iswaran said on Monday.

Details such as the timing of the ban and the area it will cover will be worked out by the police, he added.

Mr Iswaran said that while it is too early to say definitively what caused the riot, which started after a fatal traffic accident, it was "plausible that alcohol consumption was a contributory factor".

"And that is why we have taken this step in the first instance in order to stabilise the situation," he said.

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew, MP for the ward in Moulmein-Kallang GRC, said he has wanted to curb alcohol sales in the area for some time following the increase of liquor licences there.

"I know my residents will fully support this immediate measure," he said.
