Meitu Kicks Off Inaugural Meivolution Festival in Shanghai

XIAMEN, China, July 23, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Meitu, a leading photo/video editing and sharing company based in China, kicked off its much-anticipated inaugural "Meivolution Festival" on July 19th. From July 20th to 22nd, Meitu's 455 million selfie-loving and fashion-forward users, 61% of whom are between ages 18 and 30, had the opportunity to come out and share in their common passion for beauty. The event also showcased Meitu's latest beautification technologies and allowed fans to meet pop idols like China's Produce 101 group Rocket Girls, and Mao Buyi, the winner of "The Coming One," an all-male singing competition from Tencent Video.

Meivolution Festival provided Meitu’s 455 million selfie loving, and fashion-forward users, of whom 61% are between the age of 18 – 30, the opportunity to come out and experience exciting new Meitu products.

Meitu's latest imaging, AR, and AI technologies were featured at this year's festival. Visitors were able to experience the newly launched AI skin analysis app and sample a portable device capable of assessing each user's unique skincare needs. Each user that tried the new products received a personalized beauty plan and a list of recommended skincare products.

"Meitu has long been a major provider of virtual beauty related services through photo processing, hairstyle recommendations, makeup looks, and outfit coordination," said Meitu founder and CEO, Wu Xinhong. He continued to add that, "Though we are primarily known for beautifying people in the virtual space, we are now doing many things to also help people take that beauty offline. Powered by AI technology, Meitu is bridging the gap between the virtual and real worlds"

Other beautification technologies on display included skeletal recognition technology that allows users to modify their whole body with a simple tap. Featured in the recently launched Meitu T9 smartphone, the technology is capable of accurately determining the location of major skeletal joints to meticulously adjust the user's entire body in stunning detail. Unlike traditional products, this one can successfully prevent typical problems like background distortion, and alien-like head-to-body ratios.

Meitu's Magic Mirror, a 3D augmented reality mirror, is another fun and interactive feature that was on display. Simulating makeup designs on users' faces when "summoned", the feature was previously used in collaboration with Sephora and MAKE UP FOREVER, with plans in the works to partner with Hong Kong-based luxury travel retailer DFS.

The theme of the festival, "Meivolution" is a combination of the Chinese character "Mei", meaning beauty in Chinese, and the word "Evolution". The idea of evolving into a more beautiful self, in both the virtual and real worlds, was well-received: more than 20,000 visitors came to the showcase and tickets to some evening events sold out within 2 hours.

"Meivolution Festival is further proof that beauty is a natural social gathering point. With Meitu's increasing focus on social sharing, we are encouraging more people to discover and share their beauty through us. Whether at a big party like Meivolution Festival, or through our online beauty ecosystem, beauty and social sharing naturally go together," added Wu Xinhong.

“Beauty and social sharing naturally go together,” said Wu Xinhong, founder and CEO of Meitu.
