PLA Navy's 70th birthday: Safeguarding national security and world peace

BEIJING, April 18, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- A news report by China.org.cn on PLA Navy:

To commemorate the 70th founding anniversary of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, China will host a series of activities, among which an international fleet inspection in late April is the biggest highlight.

There are great expectations about the multinational navy event. The Liaoning aircraft carrier and its strike group joined a naval parade held in the South China Sea last year. But, will the country's first homemade aircraft carrier take part in this year's event, thus ushering in an era of two aircraft carriers in operation? In addition, the parade is expected to be the largest and most international in China's history. Which countries will participate? What vessels will they send? The answers will come on the day.

Different countries have different attitudes to military parades. For example, the United States seldom holds military parades, and the one that President Donald Trump asked for last year was ultimately cancelled. However, China has held various forms of military parades throughout its history. More than a dozen has been staged since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, each boosting patriotism and showcasing the Chinese military as a powerful force for peace to the world.

In the past seven decades, the PLA Navy has gone through the stages of coastal defense, inshore defense and offshore defense. With its current focus on a combined strategy of "offshore defense and open seas protection", the maritime force is developing from a "brown-water navy" to a "blue-water navy".

It is reasonable for China, the world's second largest economy, to speed up the modernization of the PLA Navy in line with its economic strength. Meanwhile, China pursues a national defense policy that is in nature defensive, never seeking hegemony or engaging in expansion. The country will display its newly-developed vessels at the sea parade, a move committed to greater military transparency.

China's armed forces have always been a force committed to safeguarding world peace. On April 4, the PLA Navy dispatched its 32nd escort task force to the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia. The Navy's contributions to maritime peace and the safe return of those soldiers are the best gifts on its 70th birthday.
