Rainwater leakage, false fire alarm in Punggol flat during downpour

SINGAPORE - Residents living in the Punggol Build-to-Order (BTO) flat, Waterway Terraces I, woke up to a fire alarm and rainwater seeping into their flats on Monday (July 13) night.

Some residents have taken to social media as well as Stomp to share their woes.

One resident told Stomp that the leakage persisted even when all windows and doors were shut.

She said: "As a result, flooding occurred in the house, and some even mentioned that the parquet flooring was damaged. The quality of Premium BTO is not that premium after all."

She added that the fire alarm will go off on nights with thunder or lightning: "It will be ringing for hours before stopping around 2am."

As quoted in The Straits Times, finance assistant Fabian Lau said he has raised the matter to the Building Services Centre (BSC) but the situation remains unresolved: "We keep getting woken up. If there's really a fire in future nobody will care."

Following Monday's fiasco, resident Johnny Chiang aired his concerns on a social media post and tagged Dr Janil Puthucheary, MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.

Mr Chiang explained that residents had previously alerted BSC to other issues such as awkwardly placed pipes but nothing was done. He added that this new incident sparked a growing concern on the quality of the flat.

In response to Mr Chiang's post, Dr Puthucheary visited all 17 units that were identified to have experienced the leakage. He said in a Facebook post that the contractors who came along on the visit assured him that the leakage problems will be fixed by this week.

However he added that issues such as damage to the parquet will take longer.

Dr Puthucheary also gave his email address to his residents and urged them to contact him when necessary.
