Advocating the Protection of Rainforests through Unique Handcrafts

As an RSPO global member, METRO views environmental protection as a crucial part of their company's sustainable development, while the sustainable palm oil advocated by the RSPO is closely related to our everyday lives. Palm oil is widely used in many supermarket products, including chocolate, ice cream, cereals, potato chips, instant noodles, artificial butter and other foods, as well as lipsticks, skincare products, soap, bath lotion and other daily necessities. According to statistics, more than 50% of products on supermarket shelves contain palm oil. The promotion of sustainable palm oil production is therefore an important cause for both RSPO and METRO.

The "handcrafting lipsticks" section organized by the RSPO appealed to many consumers on-site. With professional guidance from staff, consumers designed and made lipsticks containing sustainable palm oil with their own hands, experiencing first-hand sustainable consumption lifestyles, which further raised awareness about sustainable palm oil and the protection of tropical rainforests. By interacting directly with consumers, the RSPO enabled consumers to obtain a deeper understanding of sustainable palm oil and called for the public to support the RSPO and sustainable palm oil, buy sustainable palm oil products certified by the RSPO, and make contributions to the sustainable development of tropical rainforests through their consumer lifestyles.

Promoting Sustainable Development in Retail through "Sustainable Mini Classrooms" Online

The China Retail Sustainable Consumption Platform (CRSCP), co-founded by the UNDP and the CCFA, recently launched its "Sustainable Mini Classroom" project, providing retailers with guidance on sustainable development strategies and management. As a partner of the CRSCP, RSPO China was invited to the "Sustainable Mini Classroom," where it provided explanatory background to retailers about sustainable palm oil production, the management of sustainable supply chains, and the purchase of RSPO-certified products through five-minute classes every day.

As the most important oil crop worldwide, the area of palm oil plantations has expanded rapidly, bringing significant pressure on the environment and local populations, which necessitates greater attention from the palm oil supply chain and stakeholders worldwide. In the long run, sustainability will become the most important aspect of consumption and its future growth. Global palm oil standards should be promoted not only to governments and international organizations, but also to consumers, raising their knowledge of sustainable palm oil and its certification.

In China, by participating in the Sustainable Consumption Week, supporting interactive activities in supermarkets such as METRO, and publishing the Chinese version of the RSPO Supply Chain Certification Standards, the RSPO is driving comprehensive promotion of sustainable palm oil. To date, there are 73 RSPO members and 81 RSPO-certified factories in China.

About RSPO

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was established in 2004 with the objective of promoting the growth and use of sustainable oil palm products through credible global standards and engagement of stakeholders. The seat of the association is in Zurich, Switzerland, while the secretariat is currently based in Kuala Lumpur with a satellite office in Jakarta. RSPO claims more than 3,082 member organizations.

The RSPO is a not-for-profit that unites stakeholders from the 7 sectors of the palm oil industry -- oil palm producers, processors or traders, consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, banks/investors, and environmental and social non-governmental organizations (NGOs) -- to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil. The RSPO has developed a set of environmental and social criteria which companies must comply with in order to produce Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO).
