JAKARTA, Indonesia, March 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- School of Communication, ATMA JAYA Catholic University of Indonesia will hold ASIA-PACIFIC PUBLIC RELATIONS RESEARCH AND EDUCATION NETWORK (APPRREN) CONFERENCE and 2nd INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH ROUNDTABLE on 8-9 March 2018 with a theme "Navigating our Cyber-Worlds: Multiple Perspective Approaches to Communication."

The increasing usage and ubiquity of online media technology presents many opportunities and benefits, especially for marginalised communities that previously had limited access to information. Several sources report a marked surge of online activity particularly in the Asia Pacific region, many in countries where the infrastructure and regulatory environment have not kept apace. The access to overwhelming amount of information by massive numbers of the population provides opportunities for many private and public-sector representatives. For corporations, they can leverage their brands to new markets. For government, they can offer services and key government information more efficiently. But the open access to information without the necessary media literacy and regulatory frameworks can also pose major risks.

Communication practitioners find themselves in the middle of these challenges and opportunities. Engaging with virtual and real stakeholders require various skills and knowledge. Moreover, handling crises in the digital space take new meaning. For instance, cyber crises represent new forms of engagement with often 'unseen' actors. At the same time employees and communities become more empowered to express their voices as they are armed with digital media technologies.

To investigate these current changes, we gather people from various backgrounds to share their critical thoughts and ideas on a two-day conference. The conference will start with Keynote speech by Prof. Anne Gregory entitled Big Picture of Cyber-world: PR Dialogue. And the proceeding program consists of three sessions, which are plenary, discussion, and workshop sessions.

Plenary session:
Agung Laksamana: The Cyber World Challenges: How PR Practice Evolves
Marianne D. Sison: The Need for Advanced PR Research and Education in the Cyber World
Nia Sarinastiti: Improving PR Competence in the Cyber World: Educators and Practitioners Collaborative Approach

Discussion session: Ann Thebaut: Ethics in Public Relations Academic Work

Workshop session: Andre Hardjana: The Value of Academicians as Communication Auditors

Venue:
Yustinus Building 14th Floor, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia
Jl. Jenderal Sudirman No.51, Jakarta 12930
