Set to Open This Year, Sindangheula Dam Will Irrigate 1,000 of Agricultural Land in Banten, Indonesia

Improving the water supply, the dam will also help to prevent risk and innovate a renewable power energy.

JAKARTA, Indonesia, April 30, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The Indonesia's National Committee on Large Dams (INACOLD) and the Directorate General of Water Resources Ministry of Public Works and Housing ran a series of National Seminar on Large Dams 2019, concluded the event with a day visit to Sindangheula Dam in Serang, Banten, at April 28, 2019. Constructed in 2015, the dam's development now has reached 98% of completion and set to open by this summer.

Aligns with the priority agenda of the Indonesian government by President Joko Widodo, Nawacita, Sindangheula's dam will add up the 49 new dam projects completed by Indonesian Ministry of Public Works & Housing in 2015-2019, to ensure water and food security. On the next plan, Karian's dam or the Indonesia's third largest dam is set to inaugurate in Banten, in the year of 2020.

Sindangheula dam is targeted to irrigate over 1,000 hectares of agricultural land in Serang and Cilegon. This reclaims to increase the plant production activity of up to three times a year. "Through Sindangheula's dam, we aim to become a world food barn in 2045 and to head towards the Vision 2030 of improving the water supply in Indonesia," said Tris Raditian, Head of the Center for River Region (BBWS) Cidanau, Ciujung, and Cidurian.

In Vision 2030, Indonesian Ministry of Public Works & Housing targets the Indonesia's water storage ratio to reach 120 m3 per capita per year in 2030. Today, it only reaches 50 m3 per capita per year, with a total of 231 dams in Indonesia. Therefore, the Ministry has pushed for construction of 65 dams, aiming to complete in 2019 to irrigate around 20% of total 7.3 hectares land in Indonesia. 

"From a total of 65 dam, we have completed 14 new dams in 2018. By the end of this year, we aim to finish 15 more dams, achieving a total of 29 dams throughout Indonesia by 2019," said Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Public Works & Public Housing Republic of Indonesia.

Ir Jarot Widyoko from the Directorate General of Water Resources implied the added benefits of Sindangheula Dam, including risk prevention and innovative renewable energy to generate power. "The increase in water supply is also linked to the significant improvement of irrigated land. It ensures the water and food security in Banten area, in an effort to achieve the innovation in Vision 2030," added Ir. Jarot Widyoko.  

Many benefits of Sindangheula Dam for the community in Serang, Banten include flood mitigation at the Serang's downstream areas, supported by a flood capacity of 1.5 million m3. In an inundation area of 129 hectares, the dam is set to supply raw water resources of 0.8 m3 per second to help generating power of 0.4 megawatts through Hydroelectricity Power Plant Operator (PLTA) in Banten area. The use of renewable energy to generate power set to surpass the energy security in the nation. In particular, it aims to innovate a sustainable water management method through the eco-friendly dams.

During a visit, Indonesian Ministry of Finance, Sri Mulyani, suggested new approaches to develop the landscape of Sindangheula for sustainable tourism area. Tris Raditia added, "Tourism development will take place in upstream areas. It can be risky to develop a recreational spot near the dam, as we have to consistently maintain the safety of the area. We will locate the tourism in a specific zone, that is close to the main road access."

It guides new strategies of nature conservation and environmental management near the dam area, to significantly boost the tourism and local income. "To increase new tourism potential, we will plant the fish seeds. We encourage visitors to do manual fishing, thus it will not damage the water quality. We harness a new tourism development in the dam area to create new opportunities for local community in growing a business for significant growth in our nation," said Tris Raditian.

The Directorate General of Water Resources, under the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, has critical roles in formulating and implementing water resources management policies, provided in compliance with relevant legislation.
