Siblings Shine at Qualification Round of Bangkok Open

SPANISH, CANADIAN, SOUTH AFRICAN AND RUSSIAN TEAMS THROUGH

BANGKOK, May 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The second successive international-level beach volleyball competition to take place in the heart of a capital city kicked off at the King Mongkut's Institute of Technology, Ladkrabang in Bangkok, Thailand. The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Beach Volleyball World Tour -- Bangkok Open 2018 commenced with the single elimination qualification matches to determine the four teams from 16 qualifiers in the men's category that will progress and join the 12 teams in the main draw. Similarly, the women's qualification will also decide the four to advance to the ladies' main draw.

Two of the competition's sibling pairings making it through the qualifications. Despite playing under scorching and extremely humid conditions, the four teams that will join the men's main draw after securing wins in their respective qualification matches was Spanish siblings, Alejandro and Javier Huerta Pastor. Also through is one-half of the Manila Open 2018 silver-medal winning team of Taras Myskiv with his new partner, Aleksandr Kramarenko (RUS), Japan's Yoshiumi Hasegawa/Keisuke Shimizu and South Africa's Leo Williams/Mthokozisi Mndingi.

The other sibling pair that also made it through to the next phase of the competition is FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour debutants, Canadian twins Megan and Nicole McNamara. Also progressing is Sakurako Fujii/Samaa Miyagawa (JPN), Bree Scarbrough/Aurora Davis (United States of America, USA) and Anna Behlen/Sarah Schneider (GER).

Day two will see the 16 teams from the main draw of the men's and women's divisions descend onto the two courts at the competition venue for a packed day of matches. This includes the appearance of top-seeds, Satun winners and Langkawi Open 2018 bronze winners, Thailand's Nuttanon Inkiew/Sedtawat Padsawud (THA). Meanwhile, amongst the ladies, Cuba's power duo Leila Consuelo Martinez Ortega/Mailen Deliz Tamayo (CUB) will also be in action along with Manila Open 2018 gold-medallists Ayumi Kusano/Takemi Nishibori with the Thai ladies all hoping to make a strong impression on home sand.
