During the launch of the Roadmap, YB Puan Yeo Bee Yin said, "IGEM 2018 has always played a prominent role in growing the nation's green agenda. With this year's theme being aligned to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, it is the perfect platform to launch the Roadmap Towards Zero Single Use Plastic."

"One of the keys to creating a greener future, lies in managing plastic pollution. This roadmap helps us address the environmental impact of single use plastic by offering practical and proactive ways to lessen our plastic usage which I hope the rakyat will implement, lending their support to build a Malaysia that is free of single use plastic," she added.

As part of the government's emphasis on growing the renewable energy segment, the Sustainable Energy Development Authority announced 114.5MW of new quota for the feed-in tariff programme, comprising 74.5MW for small hydro, 10MW for biomass and 30MW of biogas, to be awarded by e-bidding.

Additionally, the Large Scale Solar 3 programme to expand generating capacity by up to 500MW was launched, with requests for proposals to develop solar projects expected to open by January 2019. Two enhancements to the Net Energy Metering programme were also proposed amongst others to encourage independent power producers to expand the national electricity grid.

A first for IGEM, the event played host to the World Energy Cities Partnership -- Mayors' Congress, organised by Datuk Bandar Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) which saw 4 Mayors, 2 Deputy Mayors and delegates from 11 members cities explore opportunities to incorporate environmental technologies to power smart sustainable cities.

Speaking on the Mayors' Congress, YB Puan Yeo Bee Yin said, "DBKL has achieved a landmark by organising the first World Energy Cities Partnership Mayors' Congress at IGEM 2018. This is indeed a momentous occasion for all of us, as we share in the success stories of cities to emulate and learn from. In doing so, we work towards mitigating climate change on a truly global scale."
