A number of experts were invited by the forum to talk about industry trends and pioneering technologies. They included Dann Yao (Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Ericsson Taiwan), Tsz-Yin Chang (Director of Life Style & Healthcare Division, Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center, Industrial Technology Research Institute), Danny Yang (General Manager of Bosch Automotive Original Equipment Sales Department), David Lee (General Manager, Power Supply & Display, TUV Rheinland), and Justin Yu (Manager, Information and Communications Technologies, TUV Rheinland), who explored such topics as 5G networks, IoT opportunities for a smart health industry, connected solutions for future mobility simplification, and the challenges facing AIoT. Yi-an Han, a manager with Amazon Web Services, used his company's own example to illustrate the key to innovation, while TUV Rheinland sales manager Cindy Chen highlighted key areas to watch regarding data protection in the IoT age. The forum covered the latest developments in IoT software and hardware, and provided an overall picture of how boundaries in the industry and in life will be redrawn.

The exhibits at the summit contained several highlights as well. Delta Electronics showcased its building lighting solution based on the IoT concept. By combining the Bluetooth Mesh wireless network module IoT it has developed in-house with DALI power supply, Delta has been able to create a wireless lighting control system. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Extech Electronics displayed an extremely light and compact 3-in-1 safety analyzer as well as the world's first 4-in-1 safety analyzer for solar power, which will help boost the design quality and safety of products. Leading power supply maker FSP Technology showed off its power supply products for IoT, 5G, AI, and Big Data applications, emphasizing ultra-high efficiency, ultra-long life, and new energy. TUV Rheinland provided consulting services for IoT, IoV, and eye-comfort display solutions on the day as well.

One of the key highlights of the summit was the release of a white paper on trends in new displays. The report called for product designers to not only pay attention to the eye health of consumers, but also to "visual comfort" in an age where multiple displays are the norm. The 2018 displays white paper dissected the future of display monitors in terms of their market, consumers, and product value. Contents include the results of an opinion survey of more than 1,000 consumers, showing vendors what kind of displays will give their companies a competitive edge.

Are you willing to trade your privacy for convenience? Europe has always attached great importance to the protection of personal information, and it is now leading the way with the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Mandatory enforcement of the GDPR will commence on May 25, 2018, with strict standards set for personal data safety and privacy. Under the new law, non-compliant businesses can be fined up to 20 million Euros or 4% of their global annual turnover. It defines how businesses can legally apply new technologies and business innovations to exploit the immense value inherent in personal information. GDPR enshrines in law the importance of user privacy.

The IoT can provide us with an even more convenient lifestyle, but data is a two-edged sword. Though the IoT has tremendous growth potential, there are still many security problems waiting to be solved. The Smart Technology Rocks Summit hosted by TUV Rheinland on May 11 provided an in-depth look at the convenience and security issues that technology brings. To succeed, vendors must remain aware of the latest trends. The IoT is now all the rage, and the shift from "e" (electronic) to "I" (intelligent) is as well a key trend. Are you up to the challenge?
