Cancer won’t keep Lai down

SINGAPORE - Almost 4,500 women participated in the X-Bionic Venus Run at the Marina Barrage on Saturday.

One woman had more reason than most to be proud of completing the 5km road race.

Cancer-striken Lai Sheau Wen might be wheelchair-bound, but, with the help of friends, she made it past the finish line with a broad smile on her face.

"The reason I managed to cross the finish line is them," said Lai, pointing to her friends from the Raleigh Society of Singapore, who were by her side the whole way.

"They signed me up for the run, and I wanted to do this for them."

Lai, 40, has been battling ovarian cancer for eight years and is currently undergoing chemotherapy through oral medication.

The guest-of-honour at the event was Speaker of Parliament and MP for Jurong GRC, Madam Halimah Yacob.

The run saw national athletes, like South-east Asia Games gold medal-winning rower Saiyidah Aisyah and bronze-medal hurdler Dipna

Lim-Prasad, show their support by taking part in the fringe activities.

Swiss sports apparel manufacturers X-Bionic, who sponsored this year's event to the tune of $2 million, will pledge donations to the Breast Cancer Foundation and Singapore Council of Women's Organisation.

Dr Bodo Lambertz, CEO of X-Bionic, flew in from Zurich to help flag off Saturday's race.
