China Airlines wins prizes in Wines on the Wing 2014

China Airlines (CAL) has won several prizes in the Wines on the Wing 2014 competition organised by Global Traveler magazine. The Taiwan-based carrier came in third in the "Best Sparkling Wines International First Class and Business Class" category for the Australian Antique Sparkling NV it serves.

It occupied both the third and fourth places in the "Best Red Wine International First Class" category, thanks to France's Chateau Hau-Brisson La Reserve 2010 and Australia's St. Hallet "Faith" Shiraz 2009, respectively.

It was in fifth place in the "Best White Wine International Business Class" category for serving the US Napa Valley Les Belles Collines Pinot Gris 2012.

"Faith" is regularly served in CAL's first class, while the other three wines were offered in a special series for Christmas in 2013 and Chinese New Year in 2014, CAL said.

Last year, CAL was in fourth place in the overall "Best International Fist Class Wines on the Wing." CAL said it has a special wine selection team made up of professionals.

A total of 29 airlines participated in this year's Wines on the Wing, the 10th edition of the annual competition organised by Global Traveler, an AAM-audited magazine for business and luxury travelers. The airlines provided 126 samples for tasting.

The competition took place on May 19 in New York with 24 judges participating in blind tasting of airline wines. The judges hailed from a wide range of specialties, including sommeliers, wine shop owners and winemakers, Global Traveler said. The results were released on Aug. 1.

Airlines were required to submit five different wines - two red wines, two white wines and one sparkling wine/Champagne - to be eligible for the "Best Overall International Business Class Wines on the Wing" award or the "Best Overall International First Class Wines on the Wing." This year, the overall winners were Brussels Airlines and Asiana Airlines, respectively, the magazine said.
