Chinese uni student earns extra $9k monthly by farming cockroaches

What kind of job would you do for an extra S$9,000 a month?

For a Chinese student, Tong, it's a job of the most horrifying nature, which involves dealing with thousands of live cockroaches.

Apparently, Tong, 20, is a cockroach farmer, and earns about 200,000 TWD (S$9,000) monthly.

He farms and sells cockroaches, to a booming pharmaceutical market in China in which cockroaches are used as a source of traditional medicine.

Tong's venture started when he decided to buy some cockroaches to feed his pet, but to save himself the occasional few bucks, he decided to start breeding them himself instead, reports World of Buzz.

To his horror and amazement, his cockroaches reproduced rapidly and in six months, he was suddenly staring at 30,000 to 40,000 of the creepy-crawlies.

Fortunately, he managed to find a buyer, Tse, who was an expert at farming cockroaches.

After their transaction, Tse approached Tong and asked him to be his business partner.

The duo then set up a cockroach farm.

Although it wasn't easy for Tong at first, he gradually got used to it.

Today, he cares for over 2.7 million cockroaches, of different species in their farm, where he personally feeds them, and builds them shelters.

Tong said that the cockroaches are rather 'clean' and there was nothing to be afraid of.

"Well, except for cockroaches," we'll say.
