A man in Shenyang, Liaoning province, tortured his ex-girlfriend’s cat to death when she refused to get back together, reported China Press.
In a video, the 24-year-old man was shown strangling the cat and slamming the animal on the computer keyboard. He then stabbed the cat repeatedly and threw it on the floor of the woman's rented home.
The unemployed man, who was in a relationship with his 29-year-old girlfriend for three years, had threatened to kill her cat if she did not go back to him.
According to the woman, they broke up as her parents did not approve of the relationship. On the day of the incident on Aug 10, she had planned to move out with her three cats, but her boyfriend got to the animal before she reached home. The cat which was killed was bought for 2,000 yuan ($399), while the other two cats were adopted.
Police said the woman has decided not to press charges "in consideration of their past relationship" and the pair have settled the matter through mediation. In a notice posted on Weibo, it advised couples to handle relationship problems in a calm manner, and to "avoid committing a rash act that may lead to an irreversible outcome".
