Consumers brave rain to visit electronics show

SINGAPORE - Despite the heavy torrential rain, the inaugural Consumer Electronics Exhibition (CEE) 2013 managed to attract more than 100,000 visitors with vendors selling over $20 million of gadgets and gear during the first two days.

Held since Thursday at the sixth floor of the newly renovated Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre, the exhibition covered around 118,000 sq ft - about the size of two football pitches.

"We expect the turnout to be around 300,000 and sales revenue of $55 million by the end of the show," said Mr Melvin Koh, general manager of show organiser Exhibits Inc. Exhibits Inc is a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings.

Many were there to pick up bargains, such as the 2012 Asus Nexus 7 Android tablet which went on sale at $299 for the Wi-Fi version, $100 off its usual price.

Others were there to grab the latest Apple iPad Air, which was launched last Friday, from the three telcos at the show.

Mr Vincent Wong used his day off to visit the show to buy a white 32GB iPad Air from SingTel.

"I have been waiting to buy the iPad Air. Plus, I can walk around to browse other items at the show later," the 35-year-old technician said.
