JOHOR BARU - Scented silk roses laced with perfume are the latest craze for this year's Valentine's Day as they symbolise sweet love being in the air.
While the rose still remains the favourite flower on Lovers' Day, baby's breath flowers styled as a wedding hand bouquet is getting popular thanks to K-Pop female artistes.
Jenny Florists & Handicraft Centre proprietor Jenny Gan, who runs a booth selling Valentine's gifts at KSL Mall here, said last year's paper crepe and velvet flowers were popular.
"The scented silk roses come in different hues such as light blue, white, purple, pink and red," she said when met at her booth on Wednesday.
Gan said as for soft toys, popular Japanese cartoon characters Hello Kitty and Doraemon top the list followed by Disney's animation character Stitch from the animation movie Lilo & Stitch.
Soft monkey toys are also a hit among lovers wanting to mark the Year of the Monkey, she added.
Gan said she decided to start business on the third day of Chinese New Year as Valentine's Day was just four days away and regular customers had been asking her when she would open her booth.
Gan said the silk flowers and soft toys were imported from China, adding that there were over 60 types of bouquets available with prices ranging from RM38 (S$12.80) up to RM499. Salesman Jim Chua, 20, said he opted for a bouquet of six pieces of Doraemon and silk roses priced at RM128 for his beautician girlfriend Jing Wen, 20, as she likes the anime character.
This year's Valentine's Day also marks our first anniversary of dating and we are going out for a candle light dinner," he said.
