Different cleaning techniques used

SINGAPORE - FROM DESMOND TAN

Director, Department of Public Cleanliness, National Environment Agency

We thank Mr Tan Heng Teck for his letter, "Is new method of cleaning S'pore safe?" on Jan 29.

NEA uses a combination of traditional and mechanised cleaning techniques to enhance cleaning efficacy and productivity in our highly urbanised environment.

For example, mechanised pavement and road sweepers enable our cleaners to cover much larger areas more efficiently. In addition, mechanical blowers are sometimes necessary for cleaning inaccessible areas such as under parked cars and other obstacles.

This is supplemented by manual clearance of the shifted debris and in other difficult to reach areas like drop inlet chambers. NEA will continue to evaluate novel cleaning systems where appropriate.
