Apple aims for bigger market with $1,488 desktop iMac

Apple's impregnable pricing bubble is finally beginning to burst.

It is common knowledge that Apple products have always commanded a premium, with its CEO Tim Cook emphasising at a Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet conference in 2013 that Apple doesn't want to sacrifice quality for price.

After some expensive lessons from its inexpensive iPhone 5c, Apple has decided to introduce a cheaper and smaller iMac. The new 21.5-inch desktop computer was launched today and has a starting price of $1,488.

Dubbed an 'entry-level Mac desktop', the 21.5-inch iMac features a 1.4 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor with speeds of up to 2.7 GHz, Intel HD 5000 graphics, 8GB of memory and a 500GB hard drive.

Configure-to-order options include a 1TB hard drive, a 1TB Fusion Drive, and up to 256GB flash storage.

All iMac models include next generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi, two Thunderbolt ports and four USB 3.0 ports.

The 21.5-inch iMac is available through the Apple Online Store.
