Google Maps in India now alerts users if taxi drivers take them off-route

According to folks at XDA-Developers, Google Maps has a new off-route feature that will alert the user when your ride gets sidetracked. This feature is currently only available in India and is meant to ensure passenger safety. The alert will be triggered when the taxi is off its intended route by 500 metres; it will also work when the user is driving his vehicle.

To enable the feature, there's a "Stay safer" button at the navigation interface.

Once toggled, the Stay safer feature presents two options, i.e., to share the trip's details with friends or to get-off route alerts. Google Maps has had a slew of safety features implemented recently; the latest one enables Google Maps to send SOS alerts during times of crisis.
