New telco Grid Mobile is going after millennials

Remember that mystery telco that would supposedly pay you to "live large-r"? That telco is Grid Mobile, the latest Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) on the block. The product of Grid Communications, itself a joint venture between Singtel and ST Telemedia, Grid Mobile is looking to woo millennials with its no-contract plans and offerings of additional mobile data.

"Millennials no longer want to be bound by mobile line contracts or worry about exceeding their mobile data limits. But with the recent abundance in mobile plan options, we realised there is still one major missing piece - how to integrate mobile plans into a consumer's actual lifestyle, and make them both useful and fun for the millennial consumer," said Mohamad Rizal, Senior Director and MVNO Lead at Grid Mobile.

To that end, Grid Mobile is rolling out a referral and loyalty rewards programme for its customers. You'll earn 200 gridPoints on your birthday, 50 points for every month you remain on their plan, and another 50 a month when you refer a friend. And if your friends sign up during the first three months, you'll get 250 points per month.

In addition, referring two friends a month will net you bill rebates of S$16.50 for your third bill. To further sweeten the deal, anyone who's referred within the first three months of your subscription will also receive 250 points if they sign up.

These gridPoints can then be used to offset your mobile plan bill and get cashback or merchant offers. Points can be spent on a variety of merchants and online stores, including Lazada, Spotify, Grab, and the Blizzard store (if you top up using Razer Gold).

On top of that, UOB YOLO cardholders will enjoy an exclusive 8 per cent cashback when they pay their Grid Mobile bills with the UOB YOLO card.

For S$24.90/month, Grid Mobile customers will enjoy the following:

  • 20GB of data
  • 200 minutes of outgoing calls
  • 200 SMS messages
  • Free incoming calls
  • Free caller ID

They will also get 1GB of data roaming in Malaysia with a buddy SIM card that gives them a further 1GB of data, 25 minutes of outgoing calls, and 25 SMS at no additional cost, the latter of which can be used for a second device or another family member or friend.

The company is making its plan easy to customise as well, with add-ons for more data, talk time, SMS, or data roaming packages. These add-ons are available on a monthly basis, but you can also pay a one-time fee if you need them for just the next 15 days. For example, an additional 10GB of data will cost you S$13.38.

SIM cards will also be delivered right to your doorstep when you sign up for a new plan.

It looks like competition is heating up in the local space, both from telcos with their own infrastructure and MVNOs, with rival offerings like TPG coming up. To help kick things off, Grid Mobile is running a campaign where you can show what you would do to "live life larger" by submitting a video on YouTube and tagging it with the hashtag #MINTMYMOBILE. The top prize is a free mobile plan for life.
