SingTel, M1 and Starhub users experience outage after fire at SingTel building

SINGAPORE - A fire on Wednesday afternoon at SingTel's Bukit Panjang exchange has caused a partial outage in its fixed line voice, broadband and mobile services.

A SCDF firefighter who was responding to the fire tweeted at 3:41pm that there was a "big fire" at the SingTel's Bukit Panjang Telephone Exchange, which is located at 40 Woodlands Road.

SingTel said in an update on its Facebook and Twitter pages that "[they] are working to restore its services as soon as possible."

The first complaints surfaced on SingTel's Facebook page at around 3:30 pm, with SingTel customers complaining of disruptions to their WiFi, fixed line and broadband connections.

One Facebook user said that his line has been down since 2:30pm. The same user added that SingTel's customer care hotline was down too. SingTel's 1688 hotline was down at 4:30pm when AsiaOne called.

This outage appears to have affected users located at the North-Western parts of Singapore. Users from Woodlands, Teck Whye, Choa Chu Kang, Marsiling are said to be affected.

Update at 4:50pm: The fire at SingTel's Bukit Panjang exchange has also affected M1's fibre broadband services.

M1 said in their Facebook page that there will be "updates when [they] have more information."

Update at 5:16pm: Starhub has also reported that its cable TV, cable and fibre boradband and digital voice services have been affected.

In an updated posted on their Facebook account, Starhub explained that "[they] lease some SingTel optical fibre capacity that runs through this exchange"

Update at 6:40pm: IDA has issued a statement on their Facebook page, noting that several operators have reported the fire to IDA.

IDA confirmed that fixed line telephone, broadband, cable TV and mobile services of several operators have been affected in the northern parts of Singapore.

"This may have also have affected services relying on such networks. IDA is currently investigating the issue."

Specifically, 18 out of the bank's 80-plus banking branches and ATMs there could not be connected to the Internet. Due to this, the bank is extending its banking hours by one hour today at all branches, DBS said in a statement.

DBS is taking proactive measures to minimise service disruptions and will be extending operating hours of all DBS and POSB branches today by an hour.

Customers will still have immediate access to cash via urgent over-the-counter withdrawals. All customers are assured that their funds are safe and the bank is working closely with SingTel to restore services as soon as possible.
