Global pandemic or not, the march of Singaporean men of age to enlist for national service must continue.

New precautionary measures are in place, of course. To avoid large crowds during the process, parents of enlistees aren’t allowed to send them off at Pulau Tekong like how it usually is. Safe distancing must be observed at all times, while temperature-taking procedures have been implemented.

And it was during one incidence of temperature-taking at Selarang Camp that produced yet another goldmine for the internet to cherish via the Basic Military Training Centre Facebook page.

Behold the face that says it all when one enters his first day of conscription.

The enlistee had been part of the Singapore Armed Forces’ updated direct enlistment process on Wednesday (Apr 1), in which parents had to drop off their sons at Selarang Camp. No guided tours involved and parents could only watch their newly enlisted sons take the oath of allegiance at Pulau Tekong on video.

But don’t worry, the enlistee in question had a different demeanour during a photo-op with his family.

Still, that didn’t stop the internet from getting amused by the image — so much so that there are now over 1,000 shares on Facebook. The comments have been just as droll too.

If this feels familiar, it should — back in 2016, the BMTC Facebook page posted a picture of a newly-enlisted recruit that spoke volumes of how he felt on the first day of national service.

The face says it all
