Art takes centre stage at ICON Ball 2014

SINGAPORE - The Shangri-La Hotel was swept up in a whirlwind of glitz, glamour and art Wednesday evening as members of Singapore's high society convened at the hotel's Island Ballroom to attend the annual ICON Ball.

Around 300 guests comprising of A-listers in the social and business circles turned up for ICON Ball 2014 - A Beautiful Ode to Art, organised by the Singapore Press Holdings' Chinese luxury lifestyle magazine. Into its ninth edition, the annual ball is one of the most anticipated and prestigious event of Singapore's social elites' calendar.

Managing editor of ICON, Ms Elsie Yah, said in her opening address to the guests that art has been the inspiration to many fashion labels and mentioned how this year's theme was exceptionally exciting as it pays tribute to such art.

Indeed, everything at the ICON ball, from the interior decoration, to the delectable five-course dinner paid homage to art.

The Island Ballroom was bathed in swathes of blue and purple light, and each table was decorated with delightfully pink centrepieces consisting of chocolate-covered strawberries and roses, evoking a romantic ambience for the evening.

During the dinner, each course was inspired and plated in accordance to an art movement, with the likes of Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol being honoured.

However, it was perhaps the exquisite gowns donned by the ladies of the ball that stole the show and were the true masterpieces of the evening.

In a surprise event for the guests, 20 of the best-dressed attendees were chosen by a panel of judges and unveiled to all. Designs from Marchesa and local boutique Heng Nam Nam were featured and socialites Jamie Chua and Susannah Kang were among those honoured for their inimitable style and glamour.

The night's decadence was also highlighted with a showcase of Chopard's high jewellery pieces exclusively flown in from Geneva for the ICON Ball. The ball's official jeweller revealed pieces that were curated from Chopard's Cannes Film Festival red carpet collection spanning 60 years.

In addition, CH Carolina Herrera unveiled its Spring/Summer 2014 collection in its very first fashion show here.

Managing director of SPH Magazines, Mr Dennis Pua, said: "The annual ICON Ball is a significant event that brings together top names in Singapore's high society, names of whom form ICON's premium readership which we have built over the years and will continue to grow strategically. As ICON magazine comes closer to the next milestone, its 10th year, in 2015, the goal is to continue delivering an even more enriching, engaging and experiential product across all print and digital platforms."

ICON Ball 2014 is supported by L'Queen, Chopard, CH Carolina Herrera, Galeries Bartoux, TWG Tea Company, Moet & Chandon and Rainbowly.
