Asian movie with all-Asian international cast? Yes! 'Crazy Rich Asians' includes local stars

A film set in Singapore, based off a book about Singaporeans, filled with Asian cast members, directed by an American studio. Sounds like a dream, but it's actually happening.

Following a drama episode filled with stereotypes about Singapore, and a misrepresentation of our hawker food on social media, things seem to looking up at last with the freshly released cast list for upcoming movie 'Crazy Rich Asians', which is based off the bestselling book of the same name.

Viewers can look forward to seeing local actors Pierre Png, Fiona Xie and Tan Kheng Hua on the silver screen, announced Warner Bros. Pictures on Monday (Apr 24).

The trio are part of an entirely Asian international cast, including Chinese-American actresses Constance Wu, Singapore-based host-presenter Henry Golding, and Malaysian actress actors Michelle Yeoh and Ronny Chieng.

Directed by 'Now You See Me 2' director Jon M. Chu, filming has commenced and will take place entirely on location here and in Malaysia.

The movie is based on Singapore-born Kevin Kwan's 2013 book about wealthy families living in Singapore, and marks male lead Golding's feature film debut.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Kwan wrote: "Three years ago I sat across a table from Nina Jacobson in LA and told her that my dream was to make 'Crazy Rich Asians' a showcase for the amazingly talented actors of Asian descent from all over the world. Nina promised to make my dream come true, and she kept her promise."

It follows the wealthy bachelor Nick Young as he returns to Singapore for his best friend's wedding with his girlfriend Rachel Chu, who will be played by Wu. In the process, Rachel finds out things about her boyfriend that she was unaware of - such as him being one of the most sought-after bachelors in Singapore.

Netizens welcomed the announcement with open arms, with many praising the casting decisions made.
