Music is the universal language that binds us all together. The catalyst that draws out our ability to process powerful emotions. The constant companion that has seen us through life's journey.

All it takes, is that familiar tune or lyric to bring us to our feet and start singing along at the top of our lungs.

Yes, nostalgia is an intense feeling and it's going to be what allows us to better appreciate the upcoming retro acts that will be gracing our shores.

Whether it's Scottish songstress Sheena Easton, pop superstar Belinda Carlisle, Scottish duo The Proclaimers, or perennial favourites like Backstreet Boys and Westlife; you can bet your pretty paycheck that their concerts will be a walk down memory lane.

As such, the AsiaOne team decided that it would be fun to dive deep into our proverbial Pensieves to sift out the most memorable song from our past.

And trust us, this one's a doozy.

1) Heaven Is A Place On Earth by Belinda Carlisle

"To be honest, I've heard this song a couple times but it never quite stuck in my head until it was used at the end of San Junipero (an episode of Black Mirror). Both the song and the cinematography perfectly complemented each other to create a masterpiece that made me ugly cry (a la Dawson's Creek) everytime I watched it. The whole scene was just two minutes but it was such a surreal and transcendent experience. In that moment, I believed that one day, someone can be my heaven on earth." - Bryan, 27

2) Can't Fight The Moonlight by LeAnn Rimes

"Sappy mandopop tunes were my jam during my childhood days, but I got hooked on this song one fine day. It was playing repeatedly in the background while my best friend and I were on rides at Escape Theme Park and till it was practically drilled in my head for life. Still, it was a great memory because we MIGHT have skipped classes for a day just to go to the theme park on a weekday afternoon so we could have almost the entire place to ourselves." - Lynette, 30

3) Square Rooms by Al Corley

"Oh gosh, I get goosebumps while listening to this. I remember this song the most during my teenage years in the 80s. At that time, partying meant attending tea dances in discos (yes, that's what we called them!) like Sparks and Fire. Sometimes, we would attend house parties where we would dance and engage in some underage drinking. (But there were no drugs or fighting because I was a good girl.) It brings me back to a time when I was mostly concerned about impressing the boys with my psychedelic make-up or an Akina Nakamori inspired look. Ahh, to be young and carefree." - Suzie, 48

4) River by Joni Mitchell

"This song always hits me in the feels. I fell in love with this sad Christmas tune when it was sung by Robert Downey Jr. on my favourite sitcom Ally McBeal (remember that show?). But years later, it became my breakup song because it occurred very close to Christmas, and accompanied me as I wallowed in self-pity for several nights. I still love it, but when I listen to it now, there's a twinge of sadness that comes from a real place." - Candice, 38

5) My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion

"A few years back, I was away on a long road trip in the US and I made a stop in Las Vegas to see Celine's concert residency and she sang that as her closing song. I was just so mind-blown and I had goosebumps all over, and Titanic is one of my favourite movies. So I was like, yes, I finally got to hear that famous song performed live by the legendary Celine Dion! That song kind of made my day too as my road trip wasn't exactly a happy experience." - Sheryl, 25

Well folks, there you have it. The songs of Team AsiaOne, and we hope you managed to take a little trip through your past just like we did.

We won't lie - choosing that one song that just stayed with us through the years was a total Sophie's Choice moment but it brought out a side of us that we haven't felt in a while.

And now, perhaps it's time to ask yourself... what is your song?
