CEO Billy Koh quits Ocean Butterflies

SINGAPORE - Producer-songwriter Billy Koh has left Ocean Butterflies, the home-grown music company that he co-founded in 1986.

The website of a new outfit he has founded says he quit as chief executive of Ocean Butterflies "to pursue his new business, Amusic Rights Management".

Koh, 51, had reportedly just taken over as CEO of Ocean Butterflies International last September after the previous one, Mr Lu Jian, resigned.

Ocean Butterflies grew out of the local xinyao music movement, starting with a small office in Jalan Sultan Centre. It has grown into a multinational outfit with offices in Beijing, Taiwan and Malaysia. Its roster of artists has included local and regional stars such as Liang Wern Fook, Kit Chan, A-do and JJ Lin.

In a three-decade-long music career, Koh has produced more than 200 albums for singers from Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the United States. Lianhe Zaobao said he is now recording in the US.

His new set-up's website amusicrights.com describes Amusic Rights Management as a "young international music company in the digital music era". It is "not a traditional music publisher or a record label", rather, it deals with the "publishing rights of the musical works and all other rights resulting from the reproduction of them".

Amusic Creative Team is its music production arm, and the website adds that Koh now works and travels between Los Angeles and Asian cities. Under the "artist" category in the "music" section, there is a teaser message: "It's top secret for now. Watch this in Q3."
