BENEDICT Cumberbatch's schedule is about to get busier.

The Star Trek villain is director Guillermo Del Toro's choice to play scientist Victor Frankenstein in an adaptation of the Mary Shelley novel, reported the Daily Telegraph.

Del Toro, whose robots-versus-monsters flick Pacific Rim is in theatres now, is already due to direct Cumberbatch, 36, in haunted house film Crimson Peak next year.

Sherlock star Cumberbatch played Frankenstein in a 2011 theatre adaptation in London by Danny Boyle. Then, he alternated the role and that of Frankenstein's monster with fellow British actor Jonny Lee Miller nightly.
