TAIPEI - A concert called "Songs of the century - a night of classic oldies" celebrating pop music of the past at National Dr. Sun Ya-sen Memorial Hall was cancelled yesterday 10 minutes before the show started due to the smell of dioxin filling the venue; the fire department was unable to pinpoint the source of the smell.
To ensure the safety of more than 2,200 members of the audience, organizers Hwa-Feng Culture decided on the spot to cancel the concert and announced to tickets holders that the concert would be postponed until Dec. 28.
Hwa-Feng Culture said that everything was smooth with the rehearsals yesterday afternoon and that when they decided to cancel the show, all the artists were already waiting backstage waiting to perform.
According to Hwa-Feng Culture, the pungent odour of dioxin wafted into the stage area 10 minutes before the concert. Even after an inspection from the fire department and the stage crew, they were still not able to find the reason for the smell.
Sources said that the performers thought it was a pity they were not able to perform yesterday, but that they remained optimistic and treated the rehearsal experience like a warm-up for their next chance on stage.
