Fans treated to a bangin' good time

SINGAPORE - Of all the things Korean stars come to Singapore for, chilli crab may not be the first that comes to mind.

Now K-pop group Big Bang may have the honour of being the first to have written a song about it... sort of.

"I wrote a song today about what I ate," band member Taeyang, 25, told the 35,000-strong crowd at the Padang last Friday night.

Cue screams. Yes, even the band's dinner gives their fans palpitations. "I ate chilli crab and pepper crab and Nando's," he rapped several times to giggles from the crowd.

They headlined the first night of entertainment at the 2013 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix.

Their 75-minute show - which featured hits Fantastic Baby, Lies and Bad Boy - was a tightly-edited version of the Alive world tour they took to 22 cities last year, including Tokyo, London and Lima, Peru.

Aside from revelations about their eating habits, there were other break out moments from group members, G-Dragon, TOP, Seungri and Daesung.

The youngest, Seungri, 22, who sported a leather jacket the whole night, offered up a little bit of US rapper Nelly's Hot in Herre as he wiped the sweat from his face.

Later, he mixed a little of Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines into his solo single Strong Baby.

The quintet stuck to high-energy hits, ditching ballads and slower favourites like Haru Haru, which disappointed some fans.

Miss Rianti, 21, an Indonesian student and one of the many light stick-wielding fans in the crowd, flew here with two friends to watch her idols sing live for the first time.

While her favourite song, the ballad Blue, was not on the setlist, she said group leader G-Dragon's concert debut of solo single Crooked more than made up for it.

"I don't regret missing their other concerts now, because I got to hear G-Dragon's new song live," she gushed after the concert.

The 25-year-old singer and rapper closed the show with a heartfelt message of "good luck" to the F1 drivers who will be battling it out in tonight's race.

He even had a few 'aww's' from the crowd when he said plaintively: "Someday, I want to drive, too."

The crowd included some local celebrities.

Actress Patricia Mok, 41, was frantically waving her Big Bang light stick in the middle of the crowd.

A huge G-Dragon fan, she was there with a group of friends that included fellow actress Ann Kok.

Mok thought the band was "amazing" and praised their choice of songs and the dedication to their wardrobe.

"I thought they would wear something more comfortable because it's so hot here, but Seungri wore his jacket the whole time. The entire band were sweating," she said. "I think that shows commitment."
