Jennifer Lawrence experienced it. So did fellow actress Alyssa Milano and singers Christina Aguilera and Demi Lovato. Now it looks like Godzilla isn't spared from fat-shaming either.

Gareth Edwards' version was criticised by Japanese fans of the original Godzilla film for being "an American fatty" after promotional images and trailers were released online in Japan.

Comments such as "he's supersized", "it's fat from the neck downwards and massive at the bottom", and "he's couch potato Godzilla" were hurled at the iconic monster.

Here, Godzilla cast members and film-makers have come to the atomic lizard king's defence.

Fatty! Who? Godzilla? I don't know why people have to be that way, to judge and all that. That's good in a way. Let them have low expectations. It's always nice that way, to go into a movie and be surprised the other way around.
