Idy Chan reveals the reason behind her breakup with Chow Yun Fat

They were once dubbed Hong Kong's golden couple, so why did Idy Chan and Chow Yun Fat break up all those years ago?

The 59-year-old actress, best known for her iconic role as Little Dragon Girl in the Return of the Condor Heroes, finally revealed the reason for the split in a recent interview with Taiwanese media.

When she was young, Idy often upset Yun Fat's mother with her blunt words.

The strained relationship between the two was likely the biggest reason behind the couple's breakup since the actor was known to be a filial son.

Idy and Yun Fat started dating in 1978 after they met on the set of TVB's drama series Vanity Fair.

During their five-year relationship, the actress once considered leaving showbiz to support his career if they got married.

When their relationship fell through in 1982, the actor's attempted suicide shook the entertainment industry.

But she declined to comment on the incident.

While many fans still feel that Idy and Yun Fat should still remain as a couple, Idy had different thoughts.

"If I am still together with him, he won't have what he has today."

"I don't know his wife (Jasmine Tan) personally and I've never met her, but I feel that she has really helped him."

"If we didn't break up then, he wouldn't have become an international star. That was something I couldn't help him with," Idy said.

After the split, the actor had a short-lived marriage with actress Candice Yu in 1983, and later tied the knot with Singaporean heiress Jasmine Tan in 1987.

Meanwhile, Idy married businessman Peter Chan in 1984 and parted ways with him eight years later.
