K-pop phenomenon BTS is set to receive a special honour from the Korean government

The boys of BTS have been breaking records worldwide and became the first Asian act to perform to a 40,000-strong audience at New York's Citi Field stadium just over the weekend.

The craze even caused the New York subway operation hours to be extended to cater to the fans going home from the stadium.

Now, the widely popular K-pop group can add another record under its belt by being the first idol group, as well as the youngest ever recipients of South Korea's Order of Cultural Merit.

A Blue House spokesperson announced: "It was decided that the members of BTS will receive the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit, which is awarded to the individuals who have further spread Hallyu (Korean wave) and contributed to the development of popular culture and arts."

They will be awarded alongside veterans like actor Lee Sun-Jae, who has over 40 years of experience.
