Little-known facts about the world's most famous hotels

Hotels are not just rooms for people to stay in during holidays or business trips. Featured in movies, art and songs, some hotels can be considered to have celebrity status.

Plaza Hotel in New York City is considered of the world's most legendary hotel, according to Fodor's Travel site. The iconic establishment itself should probably be awarded its own Hollywood star since it has been featured in film and art from as early as the late 1950s.

The luxurious hotel has been the setting of over 30 films and television shows including Home Alone 2, Sleepless in Seattle, Eloise in the Plaza and the popular chick flick, Bride Wars, starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson.

Waldorf Astoria in New York City is also another popular landmark that has been featured on the silver screens. The movie which propelled it to fame could arguably be Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack's 2001 romance flick, Serendipity, where the hotel "played" a key role in the story.

Other than the building itself, hotels have also been a hotspot for creativity. China Daily reported that Bloody Mary, a popular bar drink made with vodka and tomato juice, was perfected at the St Regis New York's King Cole Bar.

The popular Barry Manilow song "Copacabana" was inspired after a chat between the American singer and his pal, Bruce Sussman, at the Belmond Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, reported entertainment site Thrillist.

Other than these American hotels, many other luxurious stays around the world have also made themselves known for other reasons.

According to Thrillist, Hotel Bristol in Vienna has a little-known secret relating to the popular children's story, Bambi. Located in one of the hotel's cellar walls, a painting of Bambi stands as a homage to author Felix Salten who wrote the tale there.
