Liu Xiaodong, Pussy Riot attending inaugural Prudential Eye Awards in Singapore

SINGAPORE - One of China's foremost contemporary artists Liu Xiaodong, and feminist art collective Pussy Riot will be among other artists and celebrities in Singapore on January 18 for the inaugural Prudential Eye Awards.

Italian singer and actress Serena Autieri, Korean movie star and director Ha Jung-woo, CEO of Saatchi Gallery Nigel Hurst, and British artist Petroc Sesti will also attend the awards which celebrate and recognise artistic talent from across greater Asia.

Liu Xiaodong will be receiving an award for Outstanding Contribution to Asian Art. While Pussy Riot has been nominated in the digital/video category of the awards for their performances described as 'oppositional art' including their world notorious Punk Prayer.

Other nominees for the awards who will be attending are: Baden Pailthorpe, Fiona Lowry, Ben Quilty, and Eric Bridgeman from Australia; Yang Yongliang and Peng Yu from China; Almond Chu from Hong Kong; Jompet Kuswidananto from Indonesia; Yuji Honbori from Japan; Chaewook Lim, Yong Ho Ji, and Seoung Wook Sim from Korea; and Irina Korina and Pussy Riot from Russia.

The winner of each category will be awarded a prize of US$20,000 (S$25,278) and the overall winner will receive a further US$30,000, and be given the opportunity to exhibit at the Saatchi Gallery in London in the summer of 2014. The 20 shortlisted artists feature in an exhibition in Singapore, from January 17 to February 5 and in a limited edition publication by Skira.
