If you are a fan of mecha, monsters or Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro, watch this.

If you're not, this US$200 million (S$256 million) summer blockbuster is still pretty.

In the future, giant inter-dimensional monsters - kaiju - pour out of a breach in the Pacific Ocean. To defend itself, mankind creates huge robots controlled simultaneously by two pilots via a neural bridge called the Drift.

All goes well at first, but then the robots - Jaegers - start to suffer defeats at the claws of increasingly more powerful kaiju.

Del Toro creates a vividly believable universe where monsters and mecha lay waste to cities.

Watch out also for a small but heart-wrenching performance by Japanese child star Mana Ashida.
