One Direction's Tomlinson becomes father

LONDON - One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson announced Saturday he had become a father after stylist Briana Jungwirth gave birth to a baby boy.

"I'm pleased to say my baby son was born yesterday. He is healthy and pretty amazing. I'm very happy," Tomlinson tweeted.

He briefly dated Los Angeles-based Jungwirth in May 2015 after he broke up with his long term girlfriend Eleanor Calder.

News of the pregnancy broke in August.

The 24-year-old is the first member of four-piece British pop phenomenon One Direction to become a father.

The boy band have sold more than 50 million records worldwide.

Put together for a British television singing contest in 2010, the group swiftly developed a giant, fiercely loyal following of young girls worldwide.

One Direction are on a hiatus for at least a year. When the break was announced, their enormous teenage following was left devastated.

The Sunday Times newspaper's Rich List 2015 reckoned the band members were worth £25 million (S$50.9 million) each.
