S'pore to showcase artistic talent abroad

A showcase of local artistic talent will travel the world this year to celebrate SG50 - and literally offer visitors a taste of Singapore.

Pastry chef Janice Wong, one of 20 artists taking part in Singapore: Inside Out, plans to produce an intricate edible art installation featuring lollipops and chocolates that create the effect of 1,000 multicoloured crosses to illustrate the cross-cultural bonds in Singapore.

One will be made for the free five-day exhibition when it opens in Beijing in April, and others for its visits to London in June and New York in September.

The artwork will be eaten after each one. Ms Wong also plans to let visitors create their own art - representing their own impressions of Singapore - out of chocolate, chewing gum and other confectionery.

The 31-year-old said: "As well as letting them admire the visual display of the edible art, we'll also let them sample the candies and confection it's made of, so it's like tasting Singapore and its culture."

Poet Alvin Pang and playwright Tan Kheng Hua will also be involved in the exhibition, as will local choreographers, filmographers, architects and ceramic artists. All of them were selected by the Singapore Tourism Board.

The exhibition's creative director, Mr Randy Chan, 45, said: "It's important that as we celebrate Singapore's golden jubilee, we should also present all parts of its identity as well. Our showcase presents our local artists' exploration, response, and interpretation of the Singapore narrative."

Singaporeans will not miss out on the show - it will return here in November for a 10-day run.

"This presentation of artistic talent is definitely not an endpoint," said Mr Chan.

"We choose to see it as a catalyst to bring our art to greater global platforms."
