Sufi queen Abida Parveen in Singapore

Considered the greatest spiritual singer alive today, Abida Parveen has an effect on listeners that can be matched only by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, whom Abida has described as her "spiritual brother". The renowned Queen of Sufi will perform in Singapore on Aug 25 in a concert that is expected to last four hours.

The show is titled Abida Parveen Live In Singapore and it is organised by Out of The Box Creationz. The folk phenomenon will perform her Sufiana Kalam of the mystic poets such as Hazrat Amir Khusro, Nizamuddin Auliya, Baba Bulle Shah, Ghalib, Ghulam Farid and Faiz.

Born in Pakistan of Sindhi descent, Abida was recently seen on the singing reality show Surkshetra (Music Battlefield), a hugely popular Indo-Pakistani TV effort. Pakistan's famous TV show Coke Studio also featured her in an unplugged version that mesmerised viewers.

Famous for her Kaafi style and Arfaana Kalaam, Abida begins each number as solemnly as the previous one, sinking deeper into her kafi and Sufiana Kalam of the mystic poets.

She is a woman of few words and asks to be judged only by her music. She holds her audience spellbound with her compositions and songs like Aap Ki Abida, Chhaap Tilak, Tera Ishq Nachaya, Damadam Mast Kalander, Man Kunto Maula and many more.

Abida Parveen Live In Singapore will be held on Aug 25, 6pm at the University Cultural Centre Hall, National University of Singapore. Tickets are at $300, $250, $180, $150, $120, $100 and $70 and are available at www.sistic.com.sg
