Unique parties feature in February

This February sees some soulful events in Singapore - so for those who complain there's nothing to do in this boring little island, read on.

Local talent take centrestage this month starting with singer-songwriter Alicia Pan's performance tonight, Feb 6, at Blu Jaz Cafe in Haji Lane.

Having recently launched her self-titled EP of five songs - her second since her last release in 2006 - expect Ms Pan's performance to include hip hop, jazz and R&B influences to her original compositions.

Tonight also introduces The Henderson Project - a local collaboration of creative efforts to party with various talents.

The first underground project features local DJ Aldrin showing off his audio and visual skills in between three screenings of "Our Hobby is Depeche Mode", a documentary highlighting British electronic band Depeche Mode fans around the world and how music shapes their identities.

The night will continue with Aldrin on decks together with DJ KFC, another local talent, at 203 Henderson Road.

Hip hop heads can look forward to Sugar Shack in AltaEgo at Ann Siang Road on Saturday, Feb 7. Brought to you by the organiser behind Chroam, a monthly hip hop institution featuring local DJs, Singapore-based DJ Benny C will deliver a sexy mix of R&B and hip hop on two levels.

And if this weekend is just too early for you, start planning for next week with these parties.

Another Henderson Project will take place with "A Night of Poetry, Rhymes & Beats, Brass and Hip Hop" happening on Friday, Feb 13, at Henderson Industrial Park.

Local wordsmiths, musicians and DJs will stand along international counterparts to deliver a night of spoken word, music performances and gyrating hip hop beats.

Local poets Marc Nair, Charlene Shepherdson, Marylyn Tan and Allee Koh will spit their poetry while crooners Michaela Therese and Benjamin Kheng with L.A.B will perform a half hour set. Big beats will be presented by Mr ShiGGa Shay and his band.

Get your groove on with Lazy Habits, a seven-piece hip hop band from London with a brass section and keep grinding till late with the after-party hosted by local DJs Matteblacc, consisting of JNR and Drem.

Sunday, Feb 15, sees a day-timer, a monthly event called The Training Shed, at Labrador Park. Based in Singapore, three-piece band Mantravine will provide the soundtrack to a chilled afternoon before DJs Shellsuit and RAH (Darker Than Wax) take over to keep the dancefloor bumping into the night.

Now that's what we call a busy February.
