Why reveal your secret now, Wu Chun?

That question has taken on a life of its own online, spawning thousands of responses.

On Wednesday, actor Wu Chun, who had always insisted he was a bachelor, revealed to the Taiwanese media that he has a wife and a three-year-old child.

He said his wife is expecting a son.

Wu, 33, came clean during the press conference for his new book Ignite Courage.

The revelation has not been seen as a publicity stunt to drive book sales as all proceeds will be going to charity.

Instead, many netizens believe the actor's wife forced him to acknowledge her existence publicly because she felt threatened by sexy Chinese actress Fan Bingbing. She had been staying hidden since he entered showbiz in 2005.

According to recent Taiwanese reports, the Bruneian actor is currently filming the period flick Yang Gui Fei in Inner Mongolia with Fan, 32, and has praised her on numerous occasions for her "niceness".

FAN PLAYS HIS WIFE

In many interviews, the heart-throb has also been bringing up the fact that Fan plays his wife in the movie.

Netizens have surmised that his wife had reacted to this and forced Wu to "give her status" to fend off Fan's charms. They claim that his previous co-stars, like Taiwanese actresses Rainie Yang and Ariel Lin, are cute girl-nextdoor types, which was why his wife's feathers weren't ruffled till now.

Adding more fuel to fire is the view that Wu's reason for suddenly outing his family, after keeping them under wraps for years, is "lame".

He had claimed that his wife was the one who wanted to be kept out of the limelight because she was uncomfortable with media scrutiny. He added that she became more accepting of being in the public eye after becoming a mum.

Netizens, however, didn't buy into his explanation, with one saying that "the last thing a heavily pregnant woman would want is the paparazzi hounding her, especially when her husband isn't by her side".

Wu, who was part of Taiwanese boy band Fahrenheit, had claimed that he has been single for almost two decades.

His wife, whom he met in school when he was 16, was his first and only girlfriend.

At the recent press conference, Wu appeared jittery and looked haggard.

He bowed countless times to the media, his face filled with apparent remorse.

Stuttering and sometimes forgetting his words in mid-sentence, he said: "I want to apologise to everyone. I'm really sorry for all the wrong things that I've done and said."

But his Singapore fans are sticking by him. Said department store manager Winn Chia, 32: "He is the most amazing man for having the courage to face everything after all the white lies that he told. You can tell that he had such a hard time facing up to it, but he did it anyway."

Added housewife Adrianna Lee, 29: "I think he is so much more charming now than before he outed his secret life.

A man who has only loved one woman in his life is what every woman wants."
