EPL: Gloating Gooners

Black November? What Black November?

At the EPL Mania event organised by The New Paper at St James Wine Bar & Bistro, Arsenal fans celebrated as their club beat fellow title contenders Liverpool in their first fixture of a traditionally poor month for the Gunners.

Around 80 fans turned up, but it was the Gooners who were gloating as their team won 2-0 to open up a five-point lead at the top of the table.

"You should have signed for Arsenal," they sang, when a forlorn image of Luis Suarez appeared on the big screen.

Civil servant Shaiful Ali was celebrating with his friends after Santi Cazorla tucked away the opener in the 19th minute.

And for good reason, as he correctly predicted the time of the first goal to win $190. Six other patrons won L'Oreal hampers.

Shaiful said: "Even without Jack Wilshere and Mathieu Flamini, the other midfielders provided good defensive cover and it looks like we have the depth to challenge for the title this season.

"But Arsenal cannot be complacent. With big games against Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United coming up, it could still be a tricky month."

Liverpool fans were left licking their wounds and wondering what could have been after referee Martin Atkinson disallowed a quick free-kick routine where Jordan Henderson tapped in at 1-0.

"The referee made a poor decision," said Nelvin Ng, a 29-year-old assistant manager.

"But Liverpool were poor and the team selection was shocking.

"Henderson should have started as right wingback instead of John Flanagan and Brendan Rodgers could have fielded more attacking players such as Philippe Coutinho or Victor Moses.

"But I'm confident they will bounce back against Fulham before the Merseyside Derby and stay in the top four."
