Best thing I ate this week: Buttermilk fried chicken & waffles

'Best thing I ate' is a series where we share the best things we have eaten around Singapore. Read more here.

What: Southern fried chicken ($25) with cornbread waffles ($3); Sticky curly fries ($11)
Where: Bird Bird, 97 Frankel Ave, Singapore 458222

If fried chicken is your ultimate comfort food, then you've got to pay a visit to Bird Bird (what a name, we know), pronto.

But birds are what they do know best, evident in the buttermilk-marinated Southern Fried Chicken we ordered, which was crunchy outside yet oh-so-moist inside .

I liked that the crust of the fried chicken is not too salty nor bready, and bonus points for the thick and aromatic brown gravy which goes so well with the tender meat.

$25 gets you half a chicken, or about five large pieces. And what's southern fried chicken without waffles? Cornbread waffles to be exact. Do make sure to order these palm-sized confections ($3 each) which were amazingly soft, fluffy and tasty enough to be eaten on its own, even without the accompanying maple syrup.

Also highly addictive? Sticky curly fries ($11), which stayed wonderously crisp despite being tossed in a mixture of kewpie mayo, Sriracha, maple and soy. The heaviness sets in after awhile, so do make sure to share.

Despite paying the price for the calorific meal with a sore throat the next day, it was still worth it. If Southern Fried Chicken is not your thing, they also offer their signature Bangkok fried chicken and a Lebanese-style fried chicken.

At Bird Bird - which recently overhauled its menu and relocated from its previous location at Ann Siang Road, you just get the feeling that your food is thoughtfully prepared to ensure a satisfying experience. This holds true from the taste, down to the little things, like how the chicken platter came with a small mound of pickles that helped cut through the greasiness.

The restaurant is also popular with some celebrities, it seems. We spied former Singapore Idol, singer Taufik Batisah when we were at the restaurant at about 6pm on a Friday, waiting patiently for his takeaway order.

My only regret that evening? Not having space for their signature softie pie desserts. There's always next time, for sure.
