Best thing I ate this week: Irvins salted egg potato chips

'Best thing I ate' is a series where we share the best things we have eaten around Singapore. Read more here.

What: Irvins Salted Egg Potato Chips ($8 for a small bag; $16 for a big bag)
Where: Irvins Salted Egg, VivoCity #B2-K25, 1 Harbourfront Walk, 098585

The hype for salted egg yolk everything might have died down, but Irvins Salted Egg Yolk Chips are still drawing the crowds.

Okay, I admit I only bought this bag of chips because all of my friends were gushing about it. Even so, I certainly didn't expect them to be as addictive as they turned out to be.

Well, it was my fault for not heeding the warning on the bag: they really were dangerously addictive.

It was love at first whiff, really - opening the bag, I was greeted by the smell of salted egg. Impressively pungent, yet not cloying.

Covered with a generous amount of salted egg yolk seasoning and curry leaves, the golden chips were fragrant and crispy and were neither too oily nor too salty. And as promised by Irvins, they were incredibly addictive - my hand kept snaking its way back into the bag, even though I kept telling myself to keep the snacking in check.

After all, this was a bag of chips I had to fight tooth and nail to get my hands on. My friend, who works near VivoCity, tried to help me buy a bag from the VivoCity outlet and failed to do so for two weeks in a row, because the shop was sold out by lunchtime.

Case in point: my friend spotted people purchasing up to five packs of this salted egg goodness, which is the maximum for all walk-in customers. Considering the pretty hefty price tag for a bag of chips, that's no small investment!

Irvins started off with humble roots, with founder Irvin Gunawan coming up with the idea to coat potato chips with salted egg yolk sauce on a whim back in 2014. One thing led to another, and as they say, the rest is history.

Irvins also has outlets at Raffles Xchange, Plaza Singapura and Westgate.
