This champagne and mooncake pairing has us over the moon

Fancy pairing champagne with mooncakes? Well, the limited edition Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label and Mooncake Gift Set, you can now celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival in style this year.

Created by Veuve Clicquot in collaboration with Grand Imperial Group of Restaurants, this is the second year running that the two brands have come together to create an exlusive champagne/mooncake pairing for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Available from now till Sept 27, the limited edition gift set features a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label (75cl) with four delectable mooncakes including Assorted Fruits and Nuts with Chicken Bits, White Lotus Single Yolk, Almond with Sesame White Lotus Paste, and Pandan Lotus Paste Single Yolk.

The set of four mooncakes is sold together with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot's flagship Brut Yellow Label expression, an elegant champagne known for its fruity notes and subtle aromas of brioche and vanilla.

But the big question is: Does champagne go well with mooncakes? During the launch of the gift set, members of the media got to experience the pairing, and here's what we thought of it.

White Lotus Single Yolk

Lotus paste with a single yolk is one of the more traditional and popular mooncake flavours. While the combination with the champagne is a little strange at first, when you get to the yolk, the champagne's acidity cuts through the oiliness of the yolk perfectly, while the sweetness of the lotus paste tends to accentuate the tangy flavours in the champagne.

Almond with Sesame White Lotus Paste

As with the White Lotus Single Yolk, this one also highlights the slight sour citrus flavours of the champagne, but it is an effect that goes both ways - that slight sourness in the wine also helps to accentuate the other distinct flavours in the mooncake, such as the almonds and sesame.

Pandan Lotus Paste Single Yolk

The pandan lotus paste is much richer and sweeter compared to the white lotus paste. That richness actually dials down the sourness of the champagne, while increasing the creaminess of the wine in your mouth.

Assorted Fruits and Nuts with Chicken Bits

This was probably the best pairing out of the four. The savoury nature of this type of mooncake pairs perfectly with the champagne. The acidity of the champagne cuts through the savoury flavours perfectly, with the sour notes helping to bring out some of the fruit and nut flavours as well.

The gift set of four mooncakes and one bottle of Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label is priced at RM288 (S$96).
