A cotton monster’s sweet flight

A newly launched sweet features popular yokai Ittan Momen.

SAKAIMINATO, Tottori, Japan - The Ittan Momen (Flying cotton monster) from the manga series "GeGeGe no Kitaro" has found its way into a souvenir confectionery - a yokan Japanese sweet featuring the character went on sale last month in Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture.

"GeGeGe no Kitaro" is drawn by Shigeru Mizuki, 92, a renowned manga artist originally from Sakaiminato. It features folklore spirits and monsters known as yokai, including Ittan Momen.

In a yokai popularity vote held by the city's tourism association, Ittan Momen ranked first.

The Ittan Momen in the sweet is made of white yokan bean jelly, according to the association. The white image is surrounded by a layer of transparent square agar, which sits atop a dark brown yokan layer of the same size. When viewed from the front, Ittan Momen looks like it's flying.

Called Sakaiminato Yokan, the light-tasting product was jointly developed by the association and Minamoto Kitchoan Co., a Japanese confectionery manufacturer in Okayama that opened a manufacturing plant in Yonago in Tottori Prefecture in 2013.

Sakaiminato has promoted itself as "a town of yokai" by featuring Mizuki's yokai characters.

The 420-gram sweet sells for ¥1,400 (S$15.71) at two tourist spots in the city. Call the association at (0859) 47-3880 for more details.
