Eggs cheaper now due to increase in supply from Malaysia: Report

SINGAPORE - The prices of eggs in Singapore appears to have dropped recently, compared to the beginning of the year, Chinese evening newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported Monday.

According to the article, a tray of eggs that used to cost about $6 now costs about $4.

It attributed the dip in prices to an increase in supply of eggs from Malaysia, after a suspension was lifted on three egg farms due to a Salmonella scare in Oct 2014.

The report also attributed the glut in supply now to the maturing of the farm bred chickens bought by Malaysian farms after the cull, which have begun producing eggs.

According to the article, the chairman of the Eggs' Import/Export Trading Association here was quoted as saying that Malaysian farmers are now selling their eggs at a loss, but prices may rise in a month's time.
