I have dined at Tim Ho Wan only once - it was a tasting I was invited to. While the dim sum is decent, I have not been able to convince myself to join the snaking long queues the restaurant attracts.
But now that the chain here has expanded to five outlets - there is a new 24-hour outlet at Aperia in Lavender - the queues are much shorter. It takes 15 to 20 minutes to get a table during peak meal times, instead of the previous two hours.
Still, I find that the best thing to do is to order takeaway.
My favourite dish is the chain's signature dish, the BBQ Pork Buns ($4.50 for three), which is baked and packed to order.
The seductive buttery buns have a crusty top, similar to a Cantonese-style Polo Bun. They give such pleasure and delight whenever I bite into them because of the bun's crisp and airy texture and the sweet and sticky char siew filling.
